HDMI video card display?

Quick noob question about a video card. I just installed a EVGA geForce 8800GTS into my system. Do I need to connect my monitor directly to the HDMI video outputs, or can I still get video from my motherboard. It seems that when I connect my monitor using my VGA cord to my motherboard I don't get any video output any longer. It just says "No signal". Is this because I should be taking the HDMI directly off of the video card? Thanks!|||if you install the graphic card you have to plug into the graphic card, the motherboard output for monitor will not work as long the graphic card is in it.
